Includes traditional knowledge, housing and food industries: CO₂, kelp, muskox meat. 5. Science and technology application in Sakha. Describes measures against permafrost in diamond mines, against background of serious environmental neglect. 6. Northern science: status, tendencies and integration. Starts with 80 organisations (only 30 up to 1980), needing streamlining. In Siberia, links developed or absent are described. 7. Science and policy in circumpolar North. AC, IASC, ACIA, AMAP, IPCC, IASSA and CAFF are explained and some actual projects noted. 8. Social science and sustainable development in Arctic. Einarsson and 5 others describe 1999 Akureyri workshop and Inari successor, with their recommendations, research paradigms, usable knowledge, barriers to research and ways forward.
