Record #158100:
Greenlandic travel writing in Atuagagdliutit 1861-1890 / Marie Nordahl Svendsen.
Title: | Greenlandic travel writing in Atuagagdliutit 1861-1890 / Marie Nordahl Svendsen. |
Author(s): | Svendsen, Marie Nordahl. |
Date: | 2001. |
Abstract: | Examines Greenlandic printing in context of colonial politics during period 1860-1890. It assesses development of Greenlandic identity through cultural history of travel. Demonstrates how such writing, primarily in Atuagagdliutit, brought knowledge of world outside West Greenland to Greenlandic readers during period, and how it influenced concepts of themselves in relation to "North and East Greenland" and "rest of world". Using Pratt's "contact" perspective (1992) it shows how colonisers and colonised are distinguished by mutual relations, so travel writing played intrinsic role in nation building. |
Notes: | Unpublished thesis submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of M.Phil. in Polar Studies. |
