Abstract: Proposes new index for identifying and mapping snow and ice cover, Normalized Difference Snow/Ice Index (NDSII), using reflectance values of red and mid-infrared spectral bands of Landsat TM and VEGETATION (VGT) sensor in SPOT 4. In case study used Landsat TM image covering eastern part of Qilian mountain range in Qinghai-Xizang (Tibetan) plateau of China that gave similar results to those proposed by Hall and others (1998), so VGT sensor might be used for monitoring and mapping snow/ice cover from regional to global scales, using NDSIIVGT.
