| Abstract: | Presents data on temperature, salinity, nutrients, chlorophyll-a and primary production in upper 200 m of water column for January 2000. Summarizes distinct physical, chemical and biological characteristics of Drake Passage, Bransfield Strait, mixed zone and Weddell Sea. Discusses possible connection between low phytoplankton biomass, low water temperature and deep surface mixing down to 200 m in Weddell Sea; and high grazing pressure, low availability of iron, and low phytoplankton biomass in Drake Passage. |
