Record #157476:

Norwegian economic activity in East Greenland 1900-1960 / Siri Slettvåg.

Title: Norwegian economic activity in East Greenland 1900-1960 / Siri Slettvåg.
Author(s): Slettvåg, Siri.
Date: 2001.
Publisher: Reykjavík: University of Iceland Press
In: Aspects of Arctic and sub-Arctic history : proceedings of the International Congress on the History of the Arctic and Sub-Arctic region, Reykjavík, 18-21 June 1998. (2001.),
Abstract: Main theme is development of winter hunting in North-east Greenland. This followed strife for sovereignty after dissolution of union with Denmark in 1814, and Danish protectionist policy. Treaty of 1924 and International Court's verdict in 1933 did not prevent Norwegians from sealing, fishing and hunting furs on land up to 1959. As in Svalbard, cabins were built and from poison and foot traps Norwegians went to mainly fall traps. From 1929 hunting expeditions were run by joint venture Arktisk Naeringsdrift, which encouraged scientific results.
