Record #157404:

On the early history of the wild reindeer (Rangifer tarandus L.) in Finland / Tuija Rankama, Pirkko Ukkonen.

Title: On the early history of the wild reindeer (Rangifer tarandus L.) in Finland / Tuija Rankama, Pirkko Ukkonen.
Author(s): Rankama, Tuija.
Ukkonen, Pirkko.
Date: 2001.
In: Boreas. (2001.), Vol. 30(2) (2001)
Abstract: Early migration is discussed. Bones in dated archaeological contexts suggest two subspecies, mountain (R. t. tarandus) and forest (R. t. fennicus) deer were present as early as 9000 BP and 7000 BP respectively. Mountain variety may be descended from European Pleistocene deer, coming via west coast of Norway; forest deer came directly from east, from glacial refuge in Siberia. During Holocene, distribution ranges fluctuated in accordance with climatic and vegetational changes in northern Finland.
