Record #157327:

Rust-coloured bearded (Erignathus barbatus) and ringed (Phoca hispida) seals from Svalbard, Norway / Christian Lydersen, Kit M. Kovacs, Espen Lydersen.

Title: Rust-coloured bearded (Erignathus barbatus) and ringed (Phoca hispida) seals from Svalbard, Norway / Christian Lydersen, Kit M. Kovacs, Espen Lydersen.
Author(s): Lydersen, Christian.
Kovacs, Kit M.
Lydersen, Espen.
Date: 2001.
In: Journal of Mammalogy. (2001.), Vol. 82(1) (2001)
Abstract: Iron oxides in high concentration are probably main cause of rust- coloured faces commonly found. High concentrations of vanadium and manganese are also found in coloured fur. It is suggested that oxides are picked up when bottom feeding, which fits feeding habits of more coloured species.
