Abstract: | Authors suggest mechanism by which herbivores may influence plant abundance in arctic ecosystems: These are dominated by mosses, whose thickness insulates soil. Herbivores trample moss. Grass Poa arctica and dicot Cardamine nymanii (polar cress) suffered 50% reduction in biomass when grown in chilled soil, while moss was not affected. Excluding barnacle geese and reindeer over 7 years at Ny-Ålesund caused increase in thickness of moss layer and reduction in soil temperature of 0.9 deg.C. |
