Record #157316:

Evidence for active microbial nitrogen transfers in sea ice (Gulf of Bothnia, Baltic Sea) in midwinter / Hermanni Kaartokallio.

Title: Evidence for active microbial nitrogen transfers in sea ice (Gulf of Bothnia, Baltic Sea) in midwinter / Hermanni Kaartokallio.
Author(s): Kaartokallio, Hermanni.
Date: 2001.
In: Polar Biology. (2001.), Vol. 24(1) (2001)
Abstract: Nutrient concentrations, chlorophyll-a, bacterial biomass and relative activity of denitrifying organisms were investigated from ice core, brine and underlying water samples in Feb. 1998. In 2-3 months old ice communities were at winter stage, chl-a concentrations were below 1 mg m⁻³ and heterotrophic organisms composed 7-20% of organism assemblage. In 1-month old ice, spring bloom was developing and chl-a concentrations were up to 5.6 mg m⁻³. In relation to low salinity, high concentrations of nitrogen and phosphorus compounds were found in ice column.
