Abstract: Grazing on tundra in northern Norway was studied. Four sites were chosen. At two, graminoids dominated heavily grazed zone completely, while ericoid dwarf shrubs had almost disappeared. At one grassy site, biomass, primary production and nitrogen cycling were studied. Results suggest that intensive grazing can promote transition of tundra from moss-rich to graminoid-dominated, steppe-like vegetation and enhance productivity of summer ranges.
