Even in 1950s an elder taught his granddaughter about snake's healing power; this happened among fishing Saami in Lule valley. Power was in snakeskin belt. Insect pests plagued Olaus Magnus too. Schefferus named three types. Smoke helped keep them away, especially that of certain polypore fungi or tobacco. Tar oil is dubious means.
