Abstract: "Sockenlappar" was earlier name of almost forgotten Saami group who lived in southern Norrland and Dalarna mountains up to 19th Cent. Administration forced them in 1720s to settle. Role as horse slaughterers is most marked characteristic in material about them. Most Swedes disliked both eating and killing horses, so task of killing old horses was left to specialists. It followed logically that these Saami should also kill dogs and cats, and castrate these and other domestic animals. Dog skins were valuable; in 19th Cent. some were even nurtured for their fur. Other aspects of Saami's life included basket and rope making, craft work and healing. They were also devoted and skilful hunters and trappers.
