Abstract: Nearly 4 Ga of rocks are found in Greenland - earliest Archaean to Quaternary. One fifth of area - 410 000 km² - is exposed, with offshore continental crust double that. Crystalline rocks of Precambrian Shield predominate, having stabilised as part of Laurentian Shield c. 1600 Ma ago. Later developments took place along margins of shield, with sedimentary basins and successions reaching 10-15 km thickness. Orogenic activity then occurred in North Greenland Ellesmerian fold belt and East Greenland Caledonides. Further sedimentation occurred along continent-ocean margins both on- and offshore. Rifting in East Greenland in Devonian to Carboniferous times culminated in opening of North Atlantic in Paleocene. Sea floor spreading was accompanied by extrusion of Tertiary plateau basalts in central belt. Inland Ice is relic of Pleistocene ice ages. Mineral exploitation has been limited to cryolite, lead-zinc and coal deposits, four in all. Prospecting is concentrating on gold, diamond, lead-zinc and hydrocarbons.
