On depopulation - a case study from South-east Greenland / Hans Christian Gulløv.

Title: On depopulation - a case study from South-east Greenland / Hans Christian Gulløv.
Author(s): Gulløv, Hans Christian.
Date: 2000.
Publisher: Copenhagen: Danish Polar Center
In: Identities and cultural contacts in the Arctic : proceedings from a conference at the Danish National Museum, Copenhagen, November 30 to December 2 1999. (2000.),
Abstract: Paper goes into Egede's statement on dense population of East coast. By 20th Cent. whole population there was c. 100 at Ammassalik, with flourishing culture. Looking at designs on material culture finds similarities to Dorset, leading to hypothesis of old substrate in East Greenland. According to oral tradition, people reached region from both north and south. Thalbitzer gives oral account of "olden times" and explorer Uiartek whose voyage was basis of perceiving Greenland as island. Author thinks it unlikely that people would have come from south after Dutch appeared in Davis Strait at end of 17th Cent. Coming research programme Tunup Saqqaa will concentrate on studies of archaeological and oral evidence, including house styles, clothing and dialect.
