Record #156255:

Drum-time and Viking Age: Sámi-Norse identities in Early Mediaeval Scandinavia / Neil Price.

Title: Drum-time and Viking Age: Sámi-Norse identities in Early Mediaeval Scandinavia / Neil Price.
Author(s): Price, Neil.
Date: 2000.
Publisher: Copenhagen: Danish Polar Center
In: Identities and cultural contacts in the Arctic : proceedings from a conference at the Danish National Museum, Copenhagen, November 30 to December 2 1999. (2000.),
Abstract: Attempts to correct picture of Mediaeval North as homogeneous Viking land. Work on Saami by Zachrisson and others is starting to provide clearer picture. Inland lake graves need not be those of Saami, but graves of hunting Norse; yet signs such as antlers, and art like that on Saami drums, make it likely. Also, Dahlberg's 17th Cent. survey of Sweden includes Saami even in Dalarna. Specific examples include Vivallen, Härjedal, and Överhogdal's shamanic 8-leg horse. It is unlikely that 9 such in one picture are all Sleipnir.
