Abstract: | Inughuit has been commonly used for Polar Eskimos of Thule/Qaanaaq. It means "fine man". Root is inuq/inuit "man", affix huaq/huit "great". Examples of Inuit usage are given, including use of doubled (r)huaq on root umiak to mean either "ahoy! big ship" or "not a very big ship". It is clear to anyone of Inuit culture that Thule people would never have given themselves such a boastful name. |
