Despite didactic style, gives background, useful to any beginner in subject, on geology, archaeology, ancient migrations, shifting frontiers, but mainly on Saami and their ways, and influences from beyond - raiders, monks, traders, tax-gatherers, Lutherans, settlers, racial biology, WW2 and Germans' scorched earth, hydroelectric dams. Value of reindeer herding for land is discussed and quarrel over hunting and fishing rights and ILO Convention 169 is explained.
