Record #156080:

Brødremissions overgivelse / Henrik Wilhjelm.

Title: Brødremissions overgivelse / Henrik Wilhjelm.
Translated title: The abandonment of the Brethren Mission.
Author(s): Wilhjelm, Henrik.
Date: 2000.
Language: Danish.
In: Grønland. (2000.), Vol. 48(6-7) (2000)
Abstract: In 1900 Brethren abandoned mission after c. 200 years. It was first time that they had given up. Question is whether it was their fault or that of Danish government. Article describes history of this, probably their favourite mission, and life on stations, comparing their language and craft skills, training and length of service in Greenland with those of Lutherans. Intended sacking of Samuel Kleinschmidt, who probably contributed more than any other single person to Greenland, with his grammar, dictionary and translations, is described. He put his finger on failure of Brethren to hand over to Inuit. He moved to seminary and remained Brother. No Inuit account of closing down exists, but author believes that Kleinschmidt was right about paternalism. Unfortunately, Lutherans were not totally convinced about handing over - catechists were set up mainly for economy. Defeat by Germany over Schleswig-Holstein did not help Christian unity with Danes.
