Record #156061:

Snow avalanche climatology of western United States mountain ranges / Cary J. Mock, Karl W. Birkeland.

Title: Snow avalanche climatology of western United States mountain ranges / Cary J. Mock, Karl W. Birkeland.
Author(s): Mock, Cary J.
Birkeland, Karl W.
Date: 2000.
In: Bulletin of the American Meteorological Society. (2000.), Vol. 81(10) (2000)
Abstract: Examines main climate zones in western United States, coastal, intermountain and continental, showing their climatic characteristics leading to avalanche formation. Provides new snow avalanche climate classification based on general snowpack processes and uses it to examine variability of snow avalanche climate characteristics over western United States, particularly central Rocky Mountains, and identify relation of abnormal avalanche winters to synoptic climate patterns. Suggests improvements to bring climatic aspects into avalanche hazard assessment and emphasises importance of both daily variables and long-term records.
