Abstract: | Uses debris-covered tongue of Miage Glacier, Italian Alps, in studying effect of debris cover on thickness-change trends, 1913-99. Shows variation in different parts of ablation zones. Miage Glacier increased in volume over this period, unlike nearby uncovered glaciers. Implies that it is mass flux perturbations produce thickness changes for uncovered glaciers, rather than debris cover insulation. Because ice is preserved beneath debris cover, century-scale volume and thickness changes differ from uncovered glaciers. |
