Abstract: In 19th Cent. Alopex lagopus was common in Finnish Lapland, but was intensely hunted. It has been protected since 1940, but population has not recovered; in 1999 it consisted of 10-20 individuals. Large reindeer predators used to leave bits of carcases, but they have decreased, and slaughtering has moved from mountain sites. Competition from red foxes has increased.
