Author(s): | Magga, Ole Henrik. |
Date: | 2000. |
Language: | Norwegian. |
In: | Ottar. (2000.), Vol. 4 (2000) |
Abstract: | Nestor of Saami language gives authoritative account of development of Saami from end of long Norwegianisation (1880s - 1970s) to today. Change was heralded by storting member Isak Saba even in 1906. Sameråd began at once from 1956 to work on language question. Legal side was thrust forward by Alta case. Apart from Bible, psalms and newspaper Nuorttanáste, (Star in the East) only few "classical" Saami authors were available until renaissance under Paulus Utsi , Valkeapää and others in 1970s. Today 2347 pupils in 119 primary schools get taught in Saami, restricted only by shortage of teachers and materials. Outside classroom, even North Saami has competition from Norwegian and English; other Saami languages are in worse state. |
