Abstract: Results from heat budget observations on pond on Lirung Glacier, Nepal give absorption rate 7 times average for whole debris-covered zone. Half of heat absorbed at pond surface is released by water outflow, pointing to enlarging of englacial conduit draining water from pond and so leading to internal ablation. If roof of conduit then collapses, new formations would accelerate ablation.
