Abstract: In 1900 48% of Norway's area was more than 5 km from serious technological intrusion; in 1996 figure was 12%. Reindeer herding uses 40% of land, so is specially affected. Article surveys literature on disturbances, including skiers and snow-scooters, power lines (which worry reindeer more than was thought), and low flying. Physiological effects and flight reactions are described.
