Abstract: Authors filmed "Muskoxen's Long Journey", account of work of Christian Vibe in 1960s. Article describes first European observations of these creatures by Koldewey Expedition, 1869-1870, on Shannon Island. Muskox probably came to Greenland across Canada, just before Independence I Inuit. Much slaughter followed in getting dog food, or even in capturing young for zoos, as adult flocks were so protective. Preservation order did not come too late, luckily. 1954 expedition found numerous dead muskox and captured one which died. Some experts, seeing deadly parasites imported in reindeer, were against project. 1961 expedition succeeded in catching 14 calves, 9 bulls and 4 cows, which they took to South Strømfjord; 14 more followed in 1964. By 1985 numbers were c. 1000, now 4000, with annual cull allowed.
