Abstract: Paper discusses and compares local coping strategies where local economy collapsed in early 90s, as result of introducing market solutions to economic problems, and was restored. Places were Bolungarvik, NW Iceland, Vagur, southernmost Faroes, and Teriberka, Kola Peninsula. All have population between 1000 and 2000. Tables give production units before collapse, units and number employed just after collapse and same during restoration period. Concept of coping is central. RAM triangle - reciprocity, association, market - method is used for identifying nature of coping process and for comparisons. Association was important feature in all cases, with strengthened role of municipality.
