Abstract: Reputation of orca is of brutal, wanton killer. But in Norway it lives mainly on herring, for which it has developed advanced pack method. Other food varies from other whales, even shark, to shoaling fish and squid, but each group tends to specialise, with favourite treats such as sea lion or elephant seal. Herring are herded together in "net" of bubbles and orcas, then stunned and eaten one by one. Average adult needs 250 herring per day. In Pacific, one group learnt sound of deep lines hauling in, and would rush to eat black cod off lines. According to Pliny and King's Mirror, fishermen would catch fish chased by orca and reward latter with bread dipped in wine. Whales were summoned by high call "Simon". Article shows seal that stranded itself on skerry while 8 orca circled for 90 minutes before giving up.
