520 3# ‡aIce-cored moraines formed in Little Ice Age and with recession of glaciers at start of 19th Cent. Since then area under ice has decreased by 30%. Surfaces of some Kaffiøyra glaciers sank by up to 100 m, so it is very interesting that ice cores covered with only thin layers of moraine have lasted for decades. Contemporary climatic conditions of western shores of Spitsbergen do not allow dead ice under 175 cm of moraine to melt. Model of degradation was prepared, showing four characteristic phases.
