Abstract: Nicol's polarising prism from Iceland spar was invented in 1829. Sorby made transparent thin sections in 1850 from rocks. Pioneer was Zirkel, travelling in Iceland in 1860. Some of his earliest publications were on volcanic rocks from Iceland. Two other pioneers visiting Iceland were Des Cloizeaux and Wright.
