Energy expenditure of free-living reindeer estimated by the doubly labelled water method / Geir Gotaas, Eric Milne, Paul Haggarty, Nicholas J.C. Tyler.
Title: | Energy expenditure of free-living reindeer estimated by the doubly labelled water method / Geir Gotaas, Eric Milne, Paul Haggarty, Nicholas J.C. Tyler. |
Author(s): | Gotaas, Geir. Milne, Eric. Haggarty, Paul. Tyler, Nicholas J. C. |
Date: | 2000. |
In: | Rangifer. (2000.), Vol. 20(4) (2000) |
Abstract: | Three male reindeer 22 months old in Finnmark on natural pasture in winter were studied. Concentrations of ²H and ¹⁸O were measured in water from faeces at periods after injection of isotopes. Calculated rates of water flux and CO₂ production were found, allowing for losses of hydrogen in faecal solids and in methane from rumen. Comparison with control group shows probable effect of exercise. |
Notes: | Rangifer. Vol. 20(4) :211-219 (2000). |
Keywords: | 591.13 -- Animal digestion and inanition. 599.735.3 -- Cervidae: Rangifer tarandus. H6 -- Zoology: mammals. (*3) -- Arctic regions. (*582) -- Finnmark. |
