Record #155454:

Evidence against pervasive bed deformation during the surge of an Icelandic glacier / Sarah Fuller, Tavi Murray.

Title: Evidence against pervasive bed deformation during the surge of an Icelandic glacier / Sarah Fuller, Tavi Murray.
Author(s): Fuller, Sarah.
Murray, Tavi.
Date: 2000.
Publisher: London: Geological Society
In: Deformation of glacial materials. (2000.),
Abstract: Investigates recently deglaciated forefield of Hagafellsjökull Vestari, Iceland, which surged in 1980, to consider degree of ice-bed coupling during surge. Flute morphometry suggests ice was well coupled to bed, while till wedges indicate ploughing was dominant, so deformation of sedimentary bed when high water pressures occurred in surge was likely. This is contradicted by laterally continuous clay bands between till layers in drumlin. Proposes reduction in strength of ice-bed interface rather than reduction in sediment strength at low pressures, so ice may have advanced by deformation of thin upper horizon rather than sliding.
