Abstract: Balloons were regularly sent up from Neumayer and Koldewey stations. Reasons for seasonal variability and long-term changes are discussed. Differences between hemispheres are identified and discussed in light of dynamic and chemical conditions. Since mid-1980s rapid ozone loss has been recorded in lower Antarctic stratosphere in spring. Similar losses have been seen in some Arctic winters. Role of internal climatic oscillations in observed temperature trends is uncertain. First results of 10 000 year integration of low order climate model indicate significant internal climate variability.
