| Abstract: | Discusses progress in molecular analysis of phytoplankton population structure, including difficulties in identifying and establishing cultures of truly representative clones; problems of fine-scale sampling; heterozygosity between populations; non-mono-clonal and highly diverse nature of phytoplankton blooms; relative importance of temporal and spatial genetic change as opposed to change between species; and role of Antarctic Circumpolar Current in determining population structure in phytoplankton populations. Reviews various molecular techniques, including high resolution DNA fingerprinting; use of sequence data from noncoding regions of internal transcribed spacer region as molecular marker; and microsatellites. |
