Abstract: Uses published and unpublished data to investigate possible mechanisms of species diversification in Antarctic fish and krill. Maps species distributions onto molecular phylogenies, and interprets results in light of various ecological and historical factors characterizing Southern Ocean. Assesses joint effect of agents such as vicariance and "jump" dispersal in species divergence. Reviews results from population genetics studies and new molecular evidence, confirming importance of oceanographic fronts in reducing migration and promoting speciation in notothenioids.
