Cyanobacteria in deserts - life at the limit? / D.D. Wynn-Williams.
Title: | Cyanobacteria in deserts - life at the limit? / D.D. Wynn-Williams. |
Author(s): | Wynn-Williams, D. D. |
Date: | 2000. |
Publisher: | Dordrecht: Kluwer Academic Publishers |
Abstract: | Overview of ecology and biology of cyanobacteria. Includes historical perspective; diversity of adaptations to hot and cold desert ecosystems; soil crust, epilithic, and endolithic species. Describes niches and interactions in desert habitats from sand and soil; epilithic, sublithic and chasmolithic; to hot desert and cold desert endolithic habitats. Discusses water deficiency, dessication and wet-dry cycles, temperature, photosynthetically-active radiation and ultra-violet radiation as stress factors in arid regions. Assesses effects of bio-weathering and nutrient availability, and thresholds of extinction. Includes several examples of Antarctic cyanobacteria. |
