Abstract: Presents computer simulations of late Proterozoic era, when multicellular animals were evolving, with coupled climate/ice-sheet model. Simulating snowball Earth, finds rapid transitions in and out of full glaciation consistent with geological evidence. Combining results with general circulation model, some simulations give equatorial belt of open water that may have provided refuge to multicellular animals.
