Date: 2000.
In: Oceanologia. (2000.), Vol. 42(1) (2000)
Abstract: Between 1600 and 1900 two numerous and ecologically important large marine mammals were extirpated in Svalbard archipelago - pelagic-feeding Balaena mysticetus and benthic-feeding Odobaenus rosmarus. Before exploitation, they numbered c. 46 000 and 25 000 animals, consuming 4 million tons of plankton and 0.4 million tons of benthic life. Authors suggest how food web altered in favour of seabirds (especially alcids and gulls), polar cod, eiders and bearded seals. Long bibliography.
