Abstract: Skin and blubber samples of 10 adult males from Alaska were used to investigate relationship between organochlorine (OC) levels in skin and blubber of individuals. Correlation of chosen components between types of tissue was significant. In August 1993 skin biopsies were collected from 25 male Atlantic walruses in SE Svalbard and from 28 mixed age and sex animals at Franz Josef Land. Component analysis showed difference between areas in OC levels. High levels in walruses from Barents Sea islands may be caused by both pollution and seal-eating habits. Study shows how to use skin biopsies non-destructively.
