| Abstract: | Summarises development and effects of volcanic eruption beneath Vatnajökull ice sheet, Iceland, 1996 and subsequent jökulhlaup. Discusses former volcanic eruptions beneath ice, giving properties of glaciers affecting subglacial eruptions, and basaltic subglacial eruptions beneath thin and thick glaciers. As volcanoes are sensitive indicators of climatic variation, they may reveal dimensions of former ice sheets. Discusses topography of Mount Murphy, Antarctica. Further research is much needed. Includes short glossary of volcanic terms. |
