Abstract: | Explores ideas about legitimacy of Russian Saami ethno-political leaders and organisations during 1990s. Examines their perception of their leaders drawing on Weber's relativistic concept of legitimacy. Reviews roots of today's Russian Saami from traditional perspective. Looks at language issues, including interaction of Soviet policy and indigenous structure in decline of Saami dialects. Studies role of educational initiatives in particular shift away from former Soviet institutions to those in Nordic countries. Presents case study of cooperation between Russian Saami school and counterpart in Finland. Seeks solutions to unresolved ethnopolitical tensions and lays out complexity of Russian Saami identity on Kola Peninsula. |
