Particle flux in an Antarctic shallow coastal environment: a sediment trap study / Irene R. Schloss, Gustavo A. Ferreyra, Guillermo Mercuri, Jens Kowalke.

Date: 1999.
Abstract: Describes dynamics of particles in shallow coastal environment of Antarctica with low pelagic primary productivity, based on results of sediment trap studies at Potter Cove, King George Island, Antarctica between 1991-95. Data include estimated sedimentation rates of total particulate matter (TPM) and chlorophyll-a; and water column temperature and salinity in relation to trap results. Water column data showed relationship with phytoplankton dynamics, stormy events, and particles containing freshwater runoff. Chlorophyl-a fluxes were higher in bottom traps, and sedimented organic fraction of TPM was higher in traps remote from bottom. Discusses significance of these dynamics for food availability for macrozoobenthic organisms present in area. In special issue Magellan-Antarctic: ecosystems that drifted apart.
