| Abstract: | Reviews physical connection between southernmost South America and Antarctic Peninsula, and its effect on evolution of benthic marine faunas. Presents palaeontological and phylogenetic evidence for origins of present day faunas in Early Cretaceous during first marine incursion across Gondwana supercontinent and formation of temperate, Pacific-margin Weddellian Province. Formation of Antarctic circumpolar current in Eocene-Oligocene led to vicariant event between Magellan and Antarctic faunas, followed by intense thermal zonation in Late Miocene resulting in full differentiation between provinces. Discusses factors contributing to evolutionary success in polar waters, and complex relationship between onset of glaciation and extinction of certain key bivalve and decapod groups.
