Abstract: Assesses impact of cats on bird populations of sub-Antarctic Iles Kerguelen. Includes increase in numbers from original pair introduced in 1950, and discussion of parasites and diseases; seasonal variations in feeding behaviour and preferred diet; attempts to eradicate cats from other sub-Antarctic islands and use of results with introduced virus on Marion Island to predict possible efficacy on Iles Kerguelen. Evaluates role of cats in ecosystems which include other introduced species harmful to bird populations, and discusses control of lower predators and rabbits as means of controlling cat populations in sensitive areas such as seabird colonies.
