Land and Saami rights / Elina Helander.

Title: Land and Saami rights / Elina Helander.
Author(s): Helander, Elina.
Date: 1999.
Publisher: Tromsø: Centre for Saami Studies, UiT
In: On customary law and the Saami rights process in Norway. (1999.),
Abstract: Article is based on interviews and discussions in villages Sirma, Båteng, Hårbma and Hillagurra in Tana district, eastern Finnmark. Customs can often be understood and applied only in particular place and circumstances. Besides land and water rights, author was interested in lake fishing, salmon fishing in Tana, grouse shooting and cloudberry picking. Concept of rights is grounded in definitions, but changes somewhat after material is analyzed. Saami concept is still full of life, and clashes with Norwegian law are inevitable, with Saami adhering to own traditions.
