Title: | Saami customary law and legal perceptions as shown in court records from Finnmark 1620-1770 / Allan Kristensen. |
Author(s): | Kristensen, Allan. |
Date: | 1999. |
Publisher: | Tromsø: Centre for Saami Studies, UiT |
In: | On customary law and the Saami rights process in Norway. (1999.), |
Abstract: | Describes records of Saami rights to land and water. It is clear that there was understanding of collective right of all in settlement to natural resources, and this was respected by local administration. Yet authorities took side of sea Saami in conflicts with Saami from Inner Finnmark over grazing for reindeer. Because concept of rights was local, it differed from place to place. Over period in question, State involvement made it more difficult in some parts to live according to Saami custom. |
