| Abstract: | Lt Col Nordström's efforts in Winter War tend to be forgotten amidst stories of gallant defence elsewhere. He was trained in Germany and gained experience in Freedom War on side of Whites, losing an arm. He then became Finland's biggest shipowner, but kept interest in defence of fatherland. At outbreak of Winter War he and family were in Upper Tornio. He saw desperate situation of outnumbered Finns around Salla and went to buy weapons from Sweden. These he got, including 2000 rifles and 8 anti-tank guns and held enemy. His deeds were recognised in Army, but not further. Another who deserved to be hero was Wallenius; in his case it might have been because of his controversial personality. |
