| Abstract: | Determines geophysical pack-ice stress from sea-ice stress measurements made during U.S. Navy Office of Naval Research Sea Ice Mechanics Initiative (SIMI) field program in Beaufort Sea, 1993-94. Describes conditions under which measured ice stress represents geophysical stress and interpretation of data in terms of pack-ice failure. Shows data consistent with indentation pressure-area curve, representing strength of ice over scales from laboratory samples to pack-ice elements of hundreds of kilometres. |
