Abstract: Experiments on fresh-water and salt-water ice under uniaxial compression at differing temperatures showed ductile-to-brittle transition strain decreases with temperature, whilst transition strain rate is an order of magnitude higher in salt-water than fresh-water ice. Supports theory that ductile-to-brittle transition is caused by suppression of crack tip creep.
