Abstract: Uses radiometric measurements at 37 GHz to determine growth rates of ice grown in tank filled with water from Lake Ladoga (Russia). Shows microwave emission during thin ice growth is dominated by interference effect of microwaves at layer boundaries air/ice and ice/water. This phenomenon can be detected and used to determine thickness and growth rate of thin freshwater ice sheet. Ice surface temperature may be retrieved from passive microwave data and thermodynamic model calculations.
