Record #153457:

Søren Zakariassen og den første kullet fra Svalbard / Per Kyrre Reymert.

Title: Søren Zakariassen og den første kullet fra Svalbard / Per Kyrre Reymert.
Translated title: Søren Zakariassen and the first coal from Svalbard.
Author(s): Reymert, Per Kyrre.
Date: 1999.
Language: Norwegian.
In: Ottar. (1999.), Vol. 5(228) (1999)
Abstract: Svalbard coal celebrated centenary in 1999. Zakariassen found sealing less profitable than before, so took handy coal from Heerodden/ Kap Heer and its vicinity to Tromsø and sold it to brewery, power station and some locals, plus some skins, blubber and down. Main income, however, came from going to haul off Prince of Monaco's grounded Princess Alice. No special clothing was used, and tools comprised crowbars, sledge hammers, wedges, spades and powder. In May 1900 shares were offered in coal company, with strong patriotic flavour, but Zakariassen's support for next trip came from Kristiana and Tønsberg. Hut on Bohemannes is oldest relic of coal mining on Svalbard. Claim was marked with labelled stakes. Load was advertised briefly in "Tromsø" paper in October. Activity on island was no longer seasonal.
